General information

• Useful numbers: helpline number: 112, national police: 158, local police: 159, fire brigade: 150, hospital: 155.
• Highway vignette: in Slovakia you must have a vignette to use the highway (7 days = 4,90 EUR/147,62 SKK, 1 month = 9,90 EUR/298,25 SKK). You can buy it in every petrol station.
• Roads: speed allowance: 130 km/h on the highway, 90 km/h on regional roads and 50 km/h in cities or villages.
• Alcohol: in Slovakia the limit is 0. So for the driver – no alcohol at all.
• State holidays: 1st of January, 6th of January, 1st of May, 8th of May, 5th of July, 29th of August, 1st of September, 15th of September, 1st of November, 17th of November, 24th of December, 25th of December and 26th of December. During these state holidays, almost everything is closed, except for supermarkets and shopping centres.
• Restaurant: most of the restaurants close at 22h00. Smoking is not allowed in restaurants during the lunchtime.
• Weather: Slovakia has a moderate continental climate, what “normally” means from December till March snow and freezing temperatures (sometimes -20°C) and from May till October warm and sunny (in summer sometimes over 30°C).
• Museums, castles,...: many museums, castles, tourist places are closed on Monday. Check this before you leave on a trip!
• Tourist information centres: you can find information centres in Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok, Liptovský Hrádok and Liptovský Ján. They can give you some brochures and answer all your questions.
